Paper Submission Guidelines

Paper Submission Guidelines

The recommendations on this page are based on the guidelines included in the

MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition.

MLA Handbook for Writers of Research Papers, 7th edition

What format should I use for the paper?

Margins and Spacing. The papers you write for this course should be typed and double-spaced with 12 point fonts and 1″ margins.

Header Information. You don’t need to use a title page. Please put the following information at the top left-hand side of the page:

Supervisor’s Name:
Your Name:
Group Number:
Paper Title:

Page numbering. Make sure to number your pages.

References. Make sure your paper is well-documented.

How do I cite sources?

To cite your sources, use the MLA (refer to handbook above) in-text citation method.

Is it okay if I attach my Works Cited page as a separate file?

Please make sure all your files are combined and handed in as one.

Where do I submit the paper, and in what file format?

You’ll submit your paper by email using the

Document Format. You need to save the paper using Word format (.doc or .docx,) rich text format (.rtf),or .pdf format. The first two are commonly available under the “Save As” function of all word-processing programs. Papers using any other format cannot be read and will not receive credit.

Filename Conventions. All submitted assignment files should follow the naming format as follows: last name, first name, “End-of-Term Paper”. For example, if Kamal Ait Ali submitted his electronic version of the paper, it would be saved as Ait Ali Kamal_End-of-Term-Paper.doc.

PLEASE don’t upload your paper under the filename “Paper 1” or some variation of that. If you think about what it would be like to receive and save 40 files all called “Paper 1,” you’ll see the logic of the filename conventions for the GROUP. Your paper will be RETURNED uncorrected if you don’t follow the filename conventions.

Where and when will you return the papers?

You submit your papers by email, I return them by email.

It takes a minimum of 1 to 2 weeks to grade a set of papers, so you can expect to have them back in that time frame (not earlier).

Where can we read the comments on the paper?

I will type the comments in the document and return it to you as a .pdf file. I add a “RETURNED” to the filename so that you know it’s the returned version of the paper: Ait Ali Kamal_End-of-Term-Paper-RETURNED.pdf.

If you took your time on the paper, you’ll notice a LATE has been added at the end: Ait Ali Kamal_End-of-Term-Paper-RECEIVED-LATE.docx. This indicates that the paper is late and therefore could not be treated within the normal time frame.

What do the correction “styles, symbols and prompts” on my paper mean?

The following basic correction styles, symbols, and prompts  are used for editing purposes:

Text highlighted in red is to be deleted.
Text highlighted in green is to be inserted.
Text highlighted in grey is to be rewritten.

All revision comments will be in orange and include the following prompts between square brackets:

[space in] = Insert space
[space out] = Remove space

[UPPER] = Use upper case
[lower]  = Use lower case

[NOT PROOFREAD] = Correction suspended and paper returned to sender because Submission Guidelines have not been followed.  Clause: The material has not been proofread before submitting.

Blue back-to-back square brackets ][ indicate that an excessively long paragraph has been broken down into smaller paragraphs.

The title provided will be edited to suit the content/theme of the paper.  If no title is provided I will suggest one.  The suggested titles are usually taken from the submitted papers themselves. If no suitable title is found in the paper I will provide one.

When do I hand in a hard copy of the paper?

Note (End-of-Term papers only!): Once the revised electronic version of the paper is returned to you, you should carry out the necessary revisions (changes) and then hand in the final hard copy to the department secretary.
