Attend to the following:<\/span><\/p>\n

– Make sure there is no noise\/music in the background.<\/span><\/p>\n

–\u00a0 Choose a decent\/neutral background (Do not show your quilt drying out on the roof top of you house in background!<\/em>)<\/span><\/p>\n

– Make sure your voice is clear\/audible.\u00a0 Articulate!<\/span><\/p>\n

– Do not read out of notes\/screen in front of you.\u00a0 At least you should not look like you are (Some of you look like you’re watching a game of tennis!<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n

What is public speaking?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

“Public Speaking”, as the term indicates, is all about speaking in public.\u00a0 In other words, talking (about a given topic) in front of an individual listener or a group of listeners.\u00a0 \u00a0How effective is your speech will depend on how well you use your public speaking skills: (1) Linguistic skills<\/span>: clarity, voice projection, tone, intonation; (2) body language<\/span>: Appearance (dress properly and be\/look confident), eye contact, posture, movement; and (3) Visual aids<\/span>: pictures, slides, maps, graphs, etc.<\/span><\/p>\n

What will the exam be like?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

The exam will be oral.\u00a0 You will speak in front of a group of classmates (No more than 10 students at a time).\u00a0 You will be presented with a stack of cards each of which holds a given topic.\u00a0 Once you choose a topic, you get 5 minutes to prepare (impromptu speech).\u00a0 Every body stays in the exam room until the whole group have taken turns to speak.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

N.B.<\/strong> Remember we are talking about exams under normal condtions.\u00a0 You never know what the covid situation will impose on us!<\/span><\/p>\n

When will the exam take place?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

As soon as I receive the final exam schedule, I will make sure it is published on the English Studies<\/a><\/span> page.\u00a0 However, the Ibn Zohr University website remains the official source of such information.<\/span><\/p>\n

How do I revise?<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

All the materials you need are published under PUBLIC SPEAKING heading on the English Studies<\/a><\/span>.\u00a0 <\/span>One the best ways to learn public speaking is to watch professional speakers.\u00a0 Try and watch as many videos of speeches as you can.\u00a0 A good place to start looking is the TED talks website.\u00a0 Watch your own performance by speaking in front of a mirror or camera. You can also practice by getting a group of friends or family to act as a makeshift audience.\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n

Public speaking skills are worthless unless you have “general knowldge” (knowing something about everything and being abreast of new developments and current affairs).\u00a0 I advise you to read as much as you can (outside the curriculum) about different topics (education, illiteracy, divorce, employment, racism, pizza, bees, etc).<\/span><\/p>\n
