Higher Education Institutions in Morocco

Types of Higher Education institutions

Higher Education institutions in Morocco can be broken down into three major types: (1) public institutions, (2)  semi-public/privately-run institutions and (3) private institutions.  All semi-public institutions are limited-access: they accept students under certain conditions (specialization, grades, etc.) and may require a fee and/or registration. Public Higher education institutions can be divided into two sub-types: Open-access and limited-access.  Public Higher education institutions also include open-access and limited-access institutions.  Many limited-access public institutions are run by the department of higher education, others are run by the department of vocational training (via the Office of Vocational Training and Employment Promotion (OFPPT) and some are run by other ministries such as the Ministry of Tourism,  the Minstry of Health, and the Ministry of Territorial planning, Urbanization & Housing.

What are the general access conditions?

    • What are the general access conditions?
    • On completion of the secondary school program (baccalaureate/higher secondary certificate), students can pursue their studies in many open-access (Mdemia_Icon_Open-Access) higher education institutions. They are, however, required to have high baccalaureate grades and take an entrance exam to attend limited-access (Mdemia_Icon_Limited-Access) institutions. Higher schools (grandes écoles) require a further two years of preparatory classes, on top of a secondary-school diploma, for admission. As for private and privately-run (Mdemia_Icon_Private) higher education institutions, students may be required to sit for an entrance exam/interview, as well as pay registration and scholarship fees.
